About Ram-leela:
Ram-leela is an upcoming romantic-drama staring Deepika Padukone and
Ranveer Singh. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ramleela is a vehement adaptation
of Romeo and Juliet with a Gujarati twist.
Ramleela is a classic Indian tale that involves the kin of age-old enemies [The Jadejas and the Rabaris] falling in love.
Characteristically Ram is born in the land of guns and goons and turns into the local village Romeo. Being a drama-filled vagabond is part of his personality. Ram is one who values loyalty over love.
Leela is a beautiful, young, fearless Gujarati girl born to an underworld mistress. Despite this she manages to be kept far removed from the violence that surrounds her. She is in love with her enemy, and puts love before self.
When Ram and Leela meet for the first time, their love makes worlds collide. Leaving their fate no option than to be etched in blood.
While the original Ramleela in the sixties stuck to the sentimental narration of this love saga, Bhansali's Ramleela, though still is an epic romantic love story, serves as much fierceness as it does passion.
Ramleela by Bhansali appears to have something a little more histrionic in scale with ample guns, vibrant costumes, a bare chested Ram, and a trigger happy Leela. Making the film's tagline 'Goliyon Ki Rasleela' apt. It also gives us a hint as to what to expect from the movie without actually revealing anything.
Initially shot in Mumbai, some sequences of Ramleela were shot in Udaipur particularly at Udaipur palace and Gangaur Ghat where a song sequence was made.
Both actors pulled through the reigns to give their best performance for the film Ramleela. In Udaipur, Ranveer Singh shot a song sequence in freezing cold water for about 45 minutes. While in Mumbai, Padukone was injured on set, however had to continue shooting as an expensive set was put up at Film City for a song. It also proves both the actors dedication to their roles.
Singh, who is playing a Gujarati boy in Ramleela, had to learn some Gujarati abuses as well as gain muscle for his character in the film. The first look of the film shows Padukone sporting a 30 kg ghaghra with a 50 meter ghera.
Bhansali also went all out to ensure the film was made with nothing getting in the way of perfection. The famed director even set up a gym on the sets in Film City Mumbai for the lead actor Ranveer Singh. This was only because he did not want Ranveer to be late for the shooting and considered this an investment that would avoidany delays that could be caused during the filming of Ramleela.
It is no secret that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a master of perfection. He pays attention to every detail in every frame, making it a masterpiece. The colour spectrum in Ramleela is so beautifully constructed that it enables the viewer to immediately connect with the land of Gujarat.
Costume design plays an integral part in all of Bhansali's films. In Ramleela, Bhansali breaks away from his love for monochrome and gives the film a fresh look that is filled with vibrant colours. This is also keeping in mind that the film is set in Gujarat, where the traditional costumes are colourful. But Bhansali takes costume design in Ramleela to a level of grandeur, making each scene look majestic. Padukone described Sanjay Leela Bhansali as a magician.
Ramleela is Deepika's first film with Bhansali. Even though Kareena and Priyanka were Bhansali's previous choices, due to unknown reasons he decided to step away from his initial choices and cast Deepika instead. Clearly, there is no arguing with a maestro, as Deepika looks stunning in the trailer, as does Ranveer.
There maybe lots of violence in the film but love is behind it all. And the chemistry shared between Ram and Leela seem to be testimony of that.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali said that he has made Ramleela as a tribute to his mother and has apparently adopted the middle name 'Leela' as a tribute to his mother - Leela Bhansali.
Blood and gore aside, Bhansali manages to maintain aestheticism and class throughout the film Ramleela.
